Boost Reading skills

 Epic Reader

One of the tools I love to recommend for reading is Epic. The Epic reader is an electronic reader filled with engaging books for children up to 6th grade.  On the reader you will find audio books, chapter books, picture books, videos and more.

Kids can find titles based on subjects they love or by choosing a format that they’d like to explore. The titles and storylines are highly engaging for children. What’s more, there are more than 40,000 books in their library.

Not only does Epic have popular titles in their collection, but they also have Epic Originals. The Epic Originals have characters that children grow to love and want to read about.

 Audio Books

There are audio books which aren’t just books for listening.  In the audio books, Epic reader highlights the words being read so that children can develop good word-to-word tracking skills. This helps to build a strong foundation for the beginning reader.  It also serves to build confidence for readers who want to enjoy a book on their own, but struggle with reading some words.

Educational Videos

Also included in the collection are short educational videos that teach kids about a range of topics including content for math, science, and social studies.  There are even musical videos like The Going to the Beach song, which are primarily fun for kids but also have a way of teaching. Kids can learn about science and the body in the Insane Brain Video, which is part of a collection called The Sung Science.

Some of the videos are read-alouds that feature a reader-teacher who shares a book in video style.  During the read aloud children get to see the pages of the book up close while the reader reads. There may be music playing in the background, giving the read-aloud experience one that kids love.

Builds Independent Reading Skills

It’s great for independent reading because even if your little reader gets stuck on a word, they can click on it and Epic will read the word for them.  Perhaps they know how to pronounce the word but are curious about the meaning, Epic provides a definition and part of speech when you click on the word. That makes for an awesome reading experience for your child.

What You Get as a Parent

Parents can create collections for their children and even assign them. As a parent, you can have up to four children on your account.

While Epic is free for educators, it is only a small price to pay for parents. Parents can instill the love of reading in their children and can add so much value to their homeschool program. You can subscribe to Epic for a small monthly fee. Doing so will give you loads of entertainment and education for your child in a safe digital environment.  Epic is accessible on any streaming device and you also have the option to download books to read when your child is offline.

Epic has been great for me and my homeschool lifestyle because it is a safe, engaging platform that builds life-long readers!
